Am I required to do an ACP Project?

All categorical internal medicine residents are required to complete at least two peer-reviewed academic projects (e.g., posters, publications, or case reports) during their three-year residency.

These projects must involve original research, data analysis, or case study work, and must be peer-reviewed; KU Grand Rounds, KU Journal Clubs, and edits to wiki sites, for example, do not satisfy the requirement.

Interns are eligible and encouraged to submit projects, and any peer-reviewed project completed as first author during the intern year will count toward graduation requirements.

If you’ve not had accepted or completed a peer-reviewed project as first author within the 12 months preceding the Kansas ACP abstract submission deadline of your second year, you will be required to submit an ACP abstract as first author with a faculty mentor.

Please submit non-ACP projects to jmoore7@kumc.edu to confirm they meet the requirement to skip ACP submission.

If you have not had accepted or completed two peer-reviewed projects as first author within the 24 months preceding the Kansas ACP abstract submission deadline of your third year, you will be required to submit an ACP abstract as first author with a faculty mentor.

As with other graduation requirements, faculty will review your progress toward academic projects at the end of each year to ensure you’re on track to meet graduation requirements.

Confirm that you are a member of the American College of Physicians (ACPOnline.org; due August 1).

Confirm that you are registered for the 2025 ACP Kansas Meeting (registration website pending).

Identify a topic:

Track down and retrieve any relevant photos/figures/pathology/radiology for your future poster.

Confirm that your project is significantly different from any other project you’ve submitted and not self-plagiarism. Recycled or minimally modified projects will not count toward the requirement.

Keep the word count to 250 words or less.

For authorship, review ICMJE authorship guidelines to make sure all listed authors are appropriate (maximum four authors, including faculty mentor(s).

Review your abstract with any faculty involved.

For Clinical Vignettes (case reports), review the CARE checklist (not every point will apply to every report).

(optional) Consider entering your abstract into ChatGPT or another AI editor with instructions to “edit for clarity and grammar observing a maximum word count of 250 words.”

Submit your abstract (preliminary deadline August 26, 2025; submission website pending).

Your poster will be in portrait orientation, as you see on the left. There’s a template here (KU login required).

Use the 42 x 60 template. DO NOT USE LANDSCAPE ORIENTATION. A landscape poster will be rejected automatically.

Be sure to review your poster with your faculty mentor and all other authors.

We will try to have a couple of open sessions for poster review.

We have a strong history of getting most abstracts accepted, so start working on your poster now.

Dr. Moore and the Internal Medicine office staff will get your posters printed for you. We are required to have them to Sharpe Printing (Stacie@sharpeprinting.com) by September 22.

So, you’ll need to have them to Dr. Moore a few days before that. Please don’t make this last-minute. It makes it very hard to get the posters printed on time.

The best way to get your draft poster to Dr. Moore is to use the link at left and put it in the folder with the primary author’s name.
